Get The Look -Marilyn Monroe- A Quick and Simple Hair and Makeup Tutorial

Marilyn Monroe can be described as sexy, but in all reality her look was simple and fabulous. Her classic red lips and natural eyes are easily duplicated, and today I will show you how this is done by following the below steps. The most important thing you will need to remember is to keep it simple.

Supplies needed:

-Hair Gel

-Hair Spray

-Hot Rollers

-Eyeliner (liquid/gel works best)

-Natural Eyeshadow (the compacts of three or more are ideal.)

-Mascara

-Red Lipstick

Step 1: Drying Your Hair

After a fresh shower towel dry your hair making sure to leave a little dampness. (About 3/4 of the way dry should be perfect.) Be sure not to completely dry. You want a little moisture so that when you apply the hot rollers you give your hair time to mold into curl.

Step 2: Prepping Your Hair

Apply about a dime sized amount (for short/medium length hair) of hair gel evenly throught your hair. Then spray a light coat of hair spray onto the top and underneath of your hair. Comb through your hair.

NOTE: If you have longer hair i suggest using a quarter size amount of gel throughout your hair.

WARNING: Hold the can/bottle of hair spray about 6-8 inches away from your head. Anycloser and your hair will be hard as a rock before the rollers even go in! (Ohhhh Noooo!)

Step 3: Applying Rollers

Apply the hot rollers to your hair. Typically you start with a section the width of your rollers in the middle of your crown and each sub-section about one to two inches wide. This "row" will go all the way back to the nape of your neck. You will want to use a thicker roller in the very front and steadily reduce the size of the roller until you have the smallest at the nape of your neck.

When applying rollers to the sides of your head, you will section off rows running vertically from the top (where the first row ends) to the bottom (where your neck line begins) using the same technique as before. Once all of your hair is in rollers add a generous coat of hair spray, but not too generous.

NOTE: When applying rollers you want to make sure your hair is smoothed out. You will then raise the section of hair straight up into the air, place the roller in the back of this piece of hair, and then roll straight down as tightly as possible. Let rollers set for about 30 minutes.

WARNING: Be very careful with hot rollers! They are after all HOT! Make sure to stay away from tender spots.

Step 4: The Eyes

While your hot rollers are setting grab what makeup you will need. If you wish you can apply your foundation here, but I typically don't wear foundation. The first step in applying this makeup look will be the eyes.

Marilyn's eyes are very natural, so natural that sometimes she never wore eye makeup. The key here will be to use as little eye make up as you can. For this particular look I have used a natural eye set by Cover Girl. It comes with four different shades, one fairly nude, two median tones, and one dark/ chocolate tone. You will want to use the lightest color to highlight your brow bone by dragging from just under the thickest part of your eyebrow to the thinest part. Next you will take a light mixture of the two median tones and apply them all over the lid. Lastly you will highlight the crease of your eye with the dark/chocolate color.

Step 5: Liner and Mascara

When lining your eyes for this look, you will want to keep it as thin as you can get it while still having a curve toward your eyebrows (which is why I suggest a liquid/gell liner.) It is very important to keep a steady hand while doing this, so if your a little nervous or have a small shake going on placing your elbow on the counter may be very useful.

As for the mascara, the less the better! When applying make sure to start at the base of your lashes and drag the brush upwards while using a back and forth motion to ensure the space between your eyeliner and lashes is completly filled.

Step 6: Lips ;)

When applying the lipstick you will want to get as close to your natural lip line as possible. If you want a true Marilyn lip, arch the top line so that it has a slow curve. (See Picture.)

Step 7: Let Down That Hair!

For thefinal step, you will slowly want to take your hair down from each roller starting from the front of the head to the back. To style, take two fingers and place each curl where you want it to lay. Lightly brush through your hair so the curls look uniform and not seperate. Add some hair spray and you are good to go!
